Problem
Built to last, but easy to miss
Caledonia is not your typical listed company. A FTSE 250 self-managed investment trust with roots in the Cayzer family’s shipping business, it invests across three capital pools — Public Companies, Private Capital and Funds — with a track record built over generations.
And what a track record. Six decades of consecutive dividend increases —six decades —through oil shocks, financial crises and even a global pandemic. Patient capital, doing exactly what it does best.
You’d think that would speak for itself. Unfortunately, it didn’t. Its biggest comms tools —the website and the annual report — certainly weren’t doing it any favours here, but in truth the issue was much deeper set than any one asset; we needed to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
Materials tended to focus on what Caledonia owned, but did little to explain what made it different. Its history was there; but the advantage that history had created? Not so much...
For a business trading at a substantial discount to NAV, these distinctions matter. Caledonia needed a clearer story and a brand that could tell it — respecting its past and where the business had come from, whilst bringing
its future firmly into focus.
Solution
Time, brought to life
The longer we spent with Caledonia and the more we got to know the business, the clearer its defining advantage became: time itself. Permanent capital, freedom from fixed fund cycles, and the patience to back the right businesses for the long term.
“Time Well Invested” brought this thinking together. Three words that gave us a foundation for the brand platform and a clear idea to build the identity around.
The challenge though was how to bring Caledonia forward, priming it for the future without turning its back on its storied heritage. Because that history is far from just decoration — it's precisely where their advantage comes from: continuity, conviction, and the confidence to take a longer view. Our job was to make those qualities really felt, rather than merely stated.
From how Caledonia introduces itself to how it explains its investment approach, the new brand gives everything a common thread. Its digital real estate, corporate reporting, videography and photography all work together in bringing that thread to life. Consistent, coherent, connected — at every touchpoint.
A clearer expression of a business that had long known exactly what it stood for.
Impact
A story worth spending time with
The most telling response came from those who know the business best: this finally felt like the Caledonia they’d been trying to describe to people for years.
Its heritage, investment philosophy and long-term outlook now come together and complement one another; through a brand that makes crystal clear what sets it apart.
"We've always known our story is a compelling one, but for years our website simply wasn't telling it. The new brand and site have given us a digital presence that matches our ambition and more importantly, it's making it easier for new investors to understand the importance of Time Well Invested, and why Caledonia is genuinely different."
The difference wasn’t just felt internally though; external stakeholder engagement noticeably picked up following the brand refresh — with the board going so far as to put exactly that on record in the annual report that followed —pointing to improved dialogue and stronger relationships with shareholders, portfolio companies and wider stakeholders alike.
+365%
increase in average session duration
And it certainly wasn't just a feeling — the numbers told the same story. Engagement was up 98%. Views per user climbed 276%, with visitors exploring three more pages than before. Whilst average session duration rose 365%, up close to five minutes on site, where previously they'd barely lasted one.
+114%
increase in AI-referred sessions
Discovery shifted just as sharply with organic search now accounting for close to a quarter of all traffic. And in a year when everybody is asking how websites can be optimised for LLMs, AI-referred sessions rose 114%, with ChatGPT referrals alone up 171%.
Nothing about Caledonia changed. What changed is that people can now finally see it.
